Markham/Harvey Grouping
Ascension-St. Susanna, St. Gerard Majella, St. John the Baptist
The parishes will unite as one new parish?with a new name. The?effective date?of the formal union of the parishes will be no later than July 1, 2021 (confirmed as April 5, 2021). St John the Baptist will be designated the parish church, where the business office and sacramental records are kept.
The RMC commission recommends ceasing regularly scheduled Masses at Ascension-St. Susanna and St. Gerard Majella and transitioning all regularly scheduled Masses to St. John the Baptist no later than the first Sunday of advent 2021. Local leadership will set a specific timeline for this transition. Many new parish communities have discerned transitioning Masses sooner than the recommended date is prudent for the community.
The Archdiocesan Priest Placement Board is actively searching for a strong pastor for the new parish, one who can promote healing and unity for this community.
Back of the Yards Grouping
Holy Cross-Immaculate Heart of Mary, St. Joseph, St. Michael the Archangel
The parishes will unite as one new parish with a new name. The effective date of the formal union of the parishes will be no later than July 1, 2021 (confirmed as April 12, 2021). Holy Cross and St. Joseph will be Sunday worship centers. St. Joseph will be designated the parish church where the sacramental records will be kept.
The Renew My Church Commission has additionally recommended:
- St. Michael the Archangel will continue to host one Sunday mass.
- Immaculate Heart of Mary will not be used for regular worship activity.
Parish leadership, as good stewards focused on mission imperatives of renewal, will continuously assess how its structures are serving the parish’s mission. The sustainability of maintaining multiple worship sites while fostering unity and the ability to grow mission outreach will be a focus going forward. To ensure discernment of this important subject continues, Cardinal Cupich asks parish leadership to submit a formal evaluation each year with a final determination within three years regarding whether continuing to operate at multiple sites best supports the new parish’s mission and ministry or if focusing the parish at fewer sites will more effectively foster unity, steward parish resources, and grow mission outreach.
As part of Wave 3*, five parish groupings recently received structural decisions. Based on months prayerful discussions and consideration, the following decisions have been made:
63rd Street Grouping
The grouping includes St. Rene Parish and St. Symphorosa Parish and School.
The parishes will unite to form a new parish, effective July 1, 2020. Both churches will continue to hold regularly scheduled Mass within the new parish. St. Symphorosa will be designated the parish church, where the business office and records are kept. St. Symphorosa will serve as the parish school.
Parish leadership, as good stewards focused on mission imperatives of renewal, will continuously assess how its structures are serving the parish’s mission. The sustainability of maintaining multiple campuses while fostering unity and the ability to grow mission outreach will be a focus going forward. To ensure discernment of this important subject continues, Cardinal Cupich asks parish leadership to submit a formal evaluation each year with a final determination within three years regarding whether continuing to operate at two campuses best supports the new parish’s mission and ministry or if focusing the parish at one campus will more effectively foster unity, steward parish resources, and grow mission outreach.
South Shore Grouping
The grouping includes:
- St. Bride Parish
- Our Lady Gate of Heaven Parish
- Our Lady of Peace Parish
- St. Philip Neri Parish and School

Blessed Alojzije Stepinac Croatian Catholic Mission will continue as a Croatian Mission. The new parish and the Croatian Mission will share use of and responsibility for Angel Guardian Church. The RMC Commission recommended all regularly scheduled Masses from St. Henry and St. Timothy transition to St. Margaret Mary Church and Angel Guardian Church no later than Ash Wednesday 2021.
There are no changes to Northside Catholic Academy, which has one of its two campuses at St. Margaret Mary.

Both churches will continue to hold regularly scheduled Mass within the new parish. Queen of the Rosary will be designated the parish church, where the business office and records are kept. Queen of the Rosary School will serve as the parish school.
The RMC Commission was particularly impressed with how clearly the Grouping Team connected how physical structures and financial resources support ministry and the upcoming work of renewal. To ensure momentum built during the discernment process of 2019 continues, Cardinal Cupich asks parish leadership to submit a formal evaluation each year with a final determination within three years regarding whether continuing to operate at two campuses best supports the new parish’s mission and ministry or if focusing the parish at one campus will more effectively foster unity, steward parish resources, and grow mission outreach.

The RMC Commission recommended all regularly scheduled Masses at St. Francis de Sales and St. George cease and transition to Annunciata and St. Kevin no later than Ash Wednesday 2021. Local leadership will set a specific timeline, and experience has been that transitioning sooner is most prudent for the community.

Cardinal Cupich asks parish leadership to submit a formal evaluation each year with a final determination within three years regarding whether continuing to operate at two campuses best supports the new parish’s mission and ministry or if focusing the parish at one campus will more effectively foster unity, steward parish resources, and grow mission outreach.
St. Genevieve and St. Stanislaus Grouping
The parishes will unite to form one, new parish, effective July 1, 2020, named Ss. Genevieve and Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr. St. Genevieve will be designated the parish church, where the business office and records are kept. St. Stanislaus will continue to operate as a church of the new parish. St. Genevieve School will serve as the parish school.
What happens next?
In all groupings where a decision was made to unite parishes or bring an existing parish into another parish, the change is made to better position the respective communities to invest their collective gifts and resources for ministry into the future.
Over the next few months, the archdiocese and the pastors of the current parishes will support the communities in their transition to the new parish and school structures, specifically as they receive support from the Operations Transition team. The archdiocese’s Renew My Church Accompaniment Team will work alongside local leadership to ensure the uniting faith communities and staff members are supported through this time of change.
All parishes will embark on the next phase of the renewal process to become a stronger, more sustainable presence for the future, capable of reaching more people in their work of making disciples of Jesus Christ, building communities with one another and inspiring witness in the world around us.
What is meant by "Wave 3?"
All parishes in the archdiocese are grouped together in groupings. Each grouping is, subsequently, part of a wave of groupings that move through the phases of renewal. Wave 4 begins this upcoming spring.
